  Asheville, NC regional information

Quick links: cities and counties || general regional information

Catawba FallsWestern North Carolina (WNC) is home to America's most popular national park, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It extends some 70 miles along the North Carolina - Tennessee border and contains 800 square miles of lush forests. It is one of the largest national parks east of the Mississippi.

WNC also contains the beautiful Pisgah National Forest, a 505,000-acre forest that is an ideal recreation place for both the young and old. Elevation ranges from 2,000 feet to 6,410 feet at Richmond Balsam Mountain. The nation's first school of forestry was founded here, and is now the Cradle of Forestry National Historic Site, located 15 minutes from the town of Brevard. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, and a host of other activities.

The nearby Nantahala National Forest is made up of approximately 530,000 acres and lies to the west of the Pisgah National Forest. The feature attraction of this region is a magnificent river gorge. Nantahala means "land of the noonday sun" because the steep gorge only gets direct sunlight during the middle of the day. The Nantahala River is a Mecca for whitewater sports enthusiasts.

Another very popular hiking location is the Dupont State Forest, in the Mills River area just south of Asheville. The southern foothills of the Appalachians are often called the "land of waterfalls" - as this picture of Triple Falls demonstrates.

One of WNC's premiere roads, the Blue Ridge Parkway, stretches along the Blue Ridge mountain range, from Virginia to Cherokee, North Carolina.

Mount Mitchell, the highest mountain east of the Rockies, is located just off the Parkway and has a hiking trail to the top for spectacular views.

Also located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway and near Asheville, is the world-class North Carolina Arboretum. This botanical showcase will delight your visionary and olfactory senses with the huge variety of native trees, flowers, and vegetation that make WNC so special.

Ladies Slipper A highly popular attraction in the Asheville area is the Biltmore Estate, a spectacular larger-than-life country retreat built over a century ago by George Vanderbilt. The centerpiece of the estate, the 250-room Biltmore House, is the largest private home in the United States.
